The fact that the Dublin Gig was not on the tour plan makes it all the more fantastic to have seen one of the world's greatest blues rock guitarists at Vicar Street last Thursday.
Originally that was to be a day off but Joe was offered a day off or play Dublin. Thankfully he chose the latter. He set the tone for the night with his opening number, the brilliant “Cradle Rock” by our very own guitar legend Rory Gallagher. Described by one of the fans at the gig as “a modern day Vivaldi”, he truly is a virtuoso of the guitar. A sign of his mastery of the instrument is how easy he makes it look.
I first came across Joe Bonamassa on “Later with Jools” and couldn't believe I hadn't heard of him before. I immediately went out and bought “The Ballad of John Henry” his 9th solo album. I liked it so much I went straight out and bought his entire back catalogue. There isn't a bad album among them.
Although steeped in blues from an early age, he sites John Mayall & the Blues Breakers, Eric Clapton and Cream and Rory Gallagher among others as his influences, stating he identifies more with the version of the blues from this side of the Atlantic. If you missed the gig, don’t miss him next time he comes to Ireland. If you were at the gig, I know you are a happy fan.
