I was delighted to get the chance to see Bonnie Prince Billy- I was home on holidays and normally when I check out gigs like this they happen a few days before or after my holiday and so i miss them- but for once this one was happening at a time when I could actually go and see it- RESULT!!!
I've been a fan of Billy's for a while now but hadnt got the chance to see any of his stuff as the Cairo Gang- except for some stuff on the internet- but the concert was absolutely brilliant.
The support act- I couldnt get their name were pretty good- although their sound wasnt overly clear but i particularly liked the fact that Billy came on and performed on their last song with them. He then kept the singer and drummer/percusionist on for his gig- which to be honest disappointed me a little as i really like his stripped back sound when it's just him and a the cairo gang, but i guess for the size of the venue it was the right call. In any case they all knitted together really well and the concert was excellent.
I've always felt that people throw the tag 'genius' around far too much- mainly to people who just dont deserve it- but in my opinion this guy is genuinely a genius. As well as really knowing how to structure a melody and song his lyrics are funny, poignant and dark, sometimes all at the same time. His seeming humility and general down-to-earthiness only adds to his appeal. Would recommend going to his gigs to anybody and cant wait for the next chance to catch him live. Even my girlfriend, who would normally complain when i put his stuff on in the car has come away a fan- the only problem is she's now 'borrowed' my complete bonnie prince billy back-catalogue!!!
