The music was wonderful. Celine Byrne is the best Mimi I have ever heard, by a long, long margin. The acting was excellent. The stage fight and the other physical interactions among the characters felt natural. The set, however, was the worst I have ever seen. There were distracting lights and videos projected that competed with the singers for attention, even lights blinking out into the audience. The dreariness of an office-like atmosphere was nothing like the dreariness of poverty. (In fact, were they short of money, they could have flogged some of that very expensive electronic equipment.) Staging the restaurant scene in some abomination of an art gallery was atrocious. The worst, possibly, was Colline singing the aria to his overcoat -- to a piece of paper. Everything in the set worked against the themes and the text of the opera. To hear Celine Byrne I would see it all again.
